MCI Names 5 New Board Members

On the heels of some interesting discussions as to the types of directors MCI will be able to attract in light of the unprecedented demands and scrutiny its directors will face (see the demands of MCI's Corporate Monitor, Richard C. Breeden for "Restoring Trust" and see the discussion of this point at the Corp Law Blog), MCI has announced the appointment of 5 new directors to its Board.

The new members include Eric Holder, currently a partner at the law firm Covington & Burling and the former Deputy Attorney General of the United States and U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. Holder is the author of the so-called "Holder Memo," which he wrote in June 1999 while with the Justice Department. The Holder Memo provides guidance to prosecutors on when and when not to indict a corporation. In July 2002, Holder argued in an editorial in the Wall Street Journal that WorldCom should not be indicted. ("Don't Indict WorldCom," by Eric Holder, July 30, 2002).
